Chad Marshall Heads Columbus Past FC Dallas

Central Defender Chad Marshall excelled at both ends of the field tonight, notching a goal and assist to lead the Crew to a 2-0 victory over visiting FC Dallas. Pending the result of tonight's Houston-Salt Lake contest, the Crew find themselves atop the MLS standings.

Tonight's victory (the team's 10th in 22 contests and their fifth in a row) also marked the return to action of 2008 MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who came on in second half stoppage time. Schelotto had missed the last four games with an injured left hamstring.

Looking Forward To Tuesday

With the ritual of the US National Team's quadrennial collapse in Estadio Azteca safely behind us, attention here in Columbus can return to club - but not domestic - soccer. Yes, there is a home game against FC Dallas this Saturday, and with Chicago breathing down our necks in the Eastern Conference that is certainly a must-win match. But lurking just beyond that is the return of something I find much more exciting right now:

Lessons from the Gold Cup Final

Ouch...

The US National Team's 0-5 loss to Mexico on Sunday afternoon hurt, on a number of levels. While it is never pleasant to be on the short end of such a lopsided scoreline, it is even worse when it comes at the hands of your closest rival. Throw in the end of a celebrated unbeaten streak, and the fact that it took place in front of a packed house, and the pain only intensifies. To help put some distance between myself and the game, I turned to the history books to gain some perspective.
