Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha
Well, we knew coming to this game how the game was going to go. They were going to play 4-5-1, they were going to bunker in and see what happened. We saw them playing against Toronto, and they got the result in Toronto, they won 1-0. So we knew what was going to happen. In the first half obviously they did a good job of being compact and being on the end of all the crosses, and Bill Gaudette made two good saves. In the second half the game opened up a litle bit and they were probably a little bit tired. I'm glad we won because we wanted to start this competition with a win.
(does it make it easier, knowing what they're going to do?)
I don't know, to be honest with you. I mean sometimes the game goes the right way, and sometimes it doesn.t We knew that whoever scored the first goal, the game was probably going to be over. But you never know when that is going to happen. Like I said, they did a very good job in the first half of disrupting the rhythm, and not allowing us to get any good chances
(were offside traps a part of the game plan?)
No. Obviously the defenders, it's their job to hold the line, and if somebody is behind, don't chase them. We knew they were going to play a long ball, and they did a good job of being compact and not getting into any races with the forwards. So that's why there was so many offsides.
(what did you tell the players at halftime?)
We talked about them getting tired a little bit because they were chasing the ball in the first half. And at some point when you get some chances you're going to score a goal. We talked bout going to the near post in front of the defenders, making the runs, moving the ball a bit quicker, and that's what happened. We have to be creative, and we won the second half.
(how do you counter when a team sets up a defensive bunker?)
Yes, absolutely. They had 8, 9 players in their own box sometimes, so its very difficult to score. We talked about shooting from distance, we talked about crossing the ball on the ground. But it seemed like in the first half they were on the end of those crosses. Obviously the guys that we subbed in the second half, the guys that came off the bench, they made a difference.
(was this an easy game to coach?)
There's never an easy game to coach. Basically, you go into the game, and I always say I like the palyers that I put on the field from the first minute, I like them to finish the game. If I don't have to make any subs, I'll be great. But sometimes you have to, you have to change the game somehow, and you have to see what happens on the field and react to it. Sometimes the decision is going to be right, sometimes the decision is going to be wrong.
(any comments on the referee?)
I think he was good, I think it was a clean game. I don't think he had to do much, to be honest with you. There were a coulple hard fouls in the beginning of the game but I think he reacted very quickly, and gave them two yellow, and that probably wasn't too much to do for him.
(was it a penalty kick?)
I have to see it again, I didn't see a replay. It was difficult to judge. Maybe he didn't have a good view, and that's why he didn't call it. But I don't know, I have to see it - I haven't seen the replay yet.
(introducing the third striker at halftime - were you a little tired of waiting for the goal to come?)
I put Steven Lenhart on the field because I wanted to change the way we play a little bit. I wanted to improve the quality on the field, and that's why I went with Stevie at halftime. He's somebody that can challenge the defenders, but in teh beginning of the game, when we put the starting lineup, I thought that lineup was going to win the game. Obviously w escored a goal with this lineup, and then we changed, we took Emmanual off the field after w scored the first goal.
